Essay Award

On 17 October, 2015, Gerard’s essay, ‘The Application of Psychoanalytic Complexity Theory to the Protection of Children from Known Sexual Offenders’, won the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Candidate Essay Award. This essay examined the insights and application of Psychoanalytic Complexity Theory to child sexual abuse prevention goals, particularly the reduction of risk posed by sexual offenders if communities recognise not only their contribution to the problem of child abuse, but also seize the opportunity to engage offenders in a relational culture that privileges child-safety. Gerard presented this paper at the 2015 International Association of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology in Los Angeles the following day.
